"What we have in our minds in a waking state and what we imagine in dreams is very much of the same nature.[5] Dream images might be with or without spoken words, other sounds or colours. But in the waking state there is usually, in the foreground, the buzz of immediate perception, feeling, mood and fleeting memory.[6] In a mental state between dreaming and being fully awake is a state known as 'day dreaming' or a meditative state, during which "the things we see in the sky when the clouds are drifting, the centaurs and stags, antelopes and wolves" are projected from the imagination.[7]".

Dreams and memory
"Eugen Tarnow suggests that dreams are ever-present excitations of long-term memory, even during waking life. The strangeness of dreams is due to the format of long-term memory, reminiscent of Penfield & Rasmussen’s findings that electrical excitations of the cortex give rise to experiences similar to dreams. During waking life an executive function interprets long term memory consistent with reality checking. Tarnow's theory is a reworking of Freud's theory of dreams in which Freud's unconscious is replaced with the long-term memory system and Freud's “Dream Work” describes the structure of long-term memory.[9]".
Это скорее для меня лично, потому что меня интересует индийский подход к этому вопросу:

"This has been found to be very effective in many cases, however it may lead to other strange things involving your dreams, such as up to 15 dreams in one night. Nothing harmful, however. Anyway, When you go to sleep, make sure your room is completely dark. Then, with your eyes closed, try to focus on the little dots that should appear to be moving on your eyelids. You will find that you can change their color at will. Continue focusing on these dots; make them dance around and form patterns and change colors, and eventualy you should enter a Lucid Dream. This may take a little practice, but is usually very effective for summoning Lucid Dreams at will. Will work better with WBTB and things like that, but is still extraordinarily effective on its own."

Make sure you know more about these herbs before you use them: some are to be used in pillows, some are to be smoked, some are to be used in tea, etc. Many B-vitamins may help you have more vivid dreams and even Lucid Dreams. Sedative drugs like Melatonin may help, and drugs like caffeine may help you with WILD and also make it easier to recall dreams. And finally, we have psychedelic drugs like DXM that may induce Lucid Dreams. Some of the drugs and herbs can be addictive, and be poisonous if taken in too large doses. For a more detailed explanation you should check out my Dreaming FAQ.
