U4N Guide to Handling Fast Wretches in Helldivers 2 Without Panic

Post by JackWalker »

Wretches can be some of the most disruptive enemies in Helldivers 2 because they attack quickly and punish players who lose track of their surroundings. They do not need to survive for long to be effective. A few rushing Wretches can force a squad away from its position while heavier enemies move closer. That is why understanding how to handle Helldivers 2 Items and fast melee threats is important for anyone who regularly plays difficult missions.

When dealing with Helldivers 2 Items in a crowded battle, I find that control is more valuable than raw damage. Wretches have a strange weakness that changes how you should aim at them. A headshot does not always finish the enemy immediately, so shooting the limbs can be a safer option. Once you get used to that approach, their attacks become easier to predict.

Why Their Heads Are Not the Best Target
The first mistake many players make is assuming that every enemy should be finished with a headshot. Wretches do not work that way.

If you destroy a Wretch's head, it can still stand and continue moving forward. It may charge in a straight direction and remain dangerous even though its body looks like it should already be dead.

This is particularly easy to miss during a busy fight. You shoot the head, turn around, and start fighting another enemy. The supposedly finished Wretch then reaches you from the side.

Shooting the arms or legs gives you more control over what happens next. Destroying both arms can kill the Wretch or leave it in a severely weakened state. Damaging the legs can also make it much harder for the enemy to close the distance.

Learn the Pounce Timing
The pounce is the attack I would pay the most attention to. Wretches can track your movement during their jump, meaning that simply moving sideways is not always enough.

When a Wretch starts its leap, try a crouch, slide, or immediate prone movement. A normal dive can still leave you vulnerable because the enemy may connect with a lateral slash.

The trick is not to overreact. If you sprint away too early, the Wretch has more time to follow your movement. If you wait too long, there may not be enough space to react.

Short, deliberate movements are often easier to control. Once you avoid the first pounce, you can turn back and deal with the Wretch before it gets another opportunity.

Do Not Let Wretches Break Your Formation
Wretches are especially dangerous when they appear alongside larger enemies. A Crusher can demand most of the squad's attention, which is exactly when a group of fast enemies can cause trouble.

Rather than immediately putting every player on the Crusher, consider clearing nearby Wretches first. Their job is to create openings. They can make players turn away from the main target, interrupt attacks, or move out of a defensive position.

Once the rushing enemies are gone, the squad can return to the heavier threat with much less pressure.

This also helps players conserve ammunition and stratagems. There is little value in using a powerful option against a large enemy while several Wretches are already standing behind you.

Keep Sentries Safe
Defensive equipment deserves its own attention. Wretches can target sentries and other equipment, so placing a powerful emplacement does not mean it will automatically survive the next wave.

After deploying a sentry, watch the approaches from the side and behind. A Wretch that slips through can reach the equipment quickly.

This is especially important during defensive objectives where your team depends on a limited number of emplacements. Losing one early can make the next enemy wave much harder.

A simple rotation helps. One player watches the main approach while another checks the flanks. You do not need to stare at the sentry constantly, but regular checks can prevent an unpleasant surprise.

Weapons for Close-Range Pressure
The SG-8 Punisher and Cookout are useful choices because stagger and pushback can interrupt rushing enemies. The Punisher Plasma works well when multiple Wretches gather together, allowing you to put pressure on several targets at once.

The Scythe and Trident offer sustained accuracy for players who prefer working on individual limbs. Machine guns provide another straightforward solution when a large group starts closing in.

The MGX-42 Bullet Storm and MG-43 can shred groups with sustained automatic fire. The Crisper adds fire damage, while gas options such as the Sterilizer can make crowded areas easier to control.

The right choice ultimately depends on how comfortable you are with close-range combat. A weapon that lets you react quickly is often more useful than one with impressive damage numbers but poor control.

Stay Calm When the Rush Starts
The biggest advantage against Wretches is awareness. Once you know that headshots can leave them moving, that pounces track movement, and that they can pressure defensive equipment, their behavior becomes much easier to read.

Good positioning also matters. Leave enough room to dodge, avoid standing with your back against obstacles, and communicate when fast enemies are coming from a flank.

There is no need to chase every Wretch across the battlefield. Keep them away from the squad, remove their limbs when possible, and eliminate the immediate threats before returning to the larger targets. Players who want to expand their inventory or prepare for upcoming missions may also choose to buy Helldivers 2 Items when building their overall setup, but smart positioning and target control will still make the biggest difference during an actual fight.
